South Africa: Nkosi Cup Arrives: Elevating International Elite Indoor Hockey

South African Hockey, in collaboration with Pro Series Indoor, proudly presents the inaugural Kathea Energy Nkosi Cup. This tri-nations tournament marks its debut year, featuring a pool stage followed by a gripping final. Promising to be a recurring highlight on the international indoor hockey calendar, the tournament is slated for December each year.

The men’s division showcases two World Cup Quarterfinalists: South Africa and Namibia and one semi-finalist in United States of America. Notably, the two African sides recently clashed in the Sultan Nazrin Shah Cup final in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the women’s division introduces Ireland alongside World Cup contender Namibia, both aiming to challenge South Africa, the reigning Tuanku Zara Cup champions and World Cup semi-finalists.

The tournament structure includes a double round-robin group stage, culminating in a thrilling final on December 19 at Wynberg Military Base. Following the triumphant staging of the first FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup outside of Europe, South African Indoor Hockey enthusiasts are in for a treat, with elite indoor hockey action happening in their backyard.

Simon Martin, CEO of PSI, expressed his delight in bringing this tournament to South Africa, stating, “I firmly believe that indoor hockey has found its home in South Africa. The success of the Indoor Hockey World Cup showcased our capability. South Africa’s hospitality is renowned globally, and the Nkosi Cup holds the promise of becoming an iconic event on the indoor hockey calendar. We’re confident this event will set a new standard of world-class indoor hockey.”

Shaune Baaitjies, interim CEO of SA Hockey, emphasized South Africa’s hosting prowess, saying, “Our nation boasts a rich history of successfully hosting events. Following the remarkable feat of hosting the Indoor World Cup on short notice, we anticipate the Nkosi Cup to further elevate the profile of Indoor Hockey. We envisage it to serve as a beacon of inspiration for children to embrace the sport. Once again, South African hockey enthusiasts are in for an exhilarating experience.”

Tickets for the tournament will be available through the SA Hockey Fan App, ensuring fans can secure their spot to witness this pinnacle of indoor hockey prowess.
