Oceania: Gold for the Fiji Women

oceania gold for the fiji women 657aba777580c - Oceania: Gold for the Fiji Women - The Solomon Island's Womens hockey team were the team to make significant advances in their technical hockey skills after coming home from the Gold Coast. Their fitness levels were not in question but their tactical awareness and base hockey skill needed improvement. They worked hard, with the support of their Australian mentor coach Leroy Phillips, and this paid off and showed with their performance at the Pacific Games where they played in the final and drew a large following of local supporters.

Oceania: Great Team of Officials at Pacific Games

oceania great team of officials at pacific games 657817746a9fa - Oceania: Great Team of Officials at Pacific Games - The group of officials came from 6 different nations (AUS, Fiji, NZL, PNG, SOL and VAN) and quickly gelled to form an amazing team. One of the key changes from the past was that this event allowed the majority to be accommodated together rather than staying with their teams. It worked so well that Oceania will look to take that as the model to use in the future. In the past the Pacific Island offcials have been accommodated with their teams but that has been a strategy to encourage NAs to recognise the importance of appointing national umpires and technical officials to fund and travel with their teams. It was great to see a change in acknowledging the importance of having NA officials gaining experience this year, firstly with the World Cup Qualifier in the Gold Coast in July and then with a flood of nominations in for the Pacific Games. The Pacific Games Council had identified that for these Games they wanted to build capacity and capability and encouraged the sports to appoint as many Pacific Island officials as possible. So out of the 23 officials appointed for hockey 15 were Pacific Islanders.

Oceania: Pacific Games Great Crowds

oceania pacific games great crowds 657817828eee8 - Oceania: Pacific Games Great Crowds - Hockey5s is a very short version of the game with 2x 10 minutes halves, lots of action and shots on goal. The fact that the 2 Solomons Islands teams were performing well encouraged the crowd to fill the stands but as the competition in both women and men's pools were close there were plenty of Fijian, Samoan, Tongan, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu supporters to add to the banter. Music was played while the teams warmed up, at half time and to celebrate a goal! This kept the crowd rocking! The fact that the athletes main Food Hall was just past the hockey venue created extra promotion for hockey and as the matches reached the semi finals and finals many athletes collected their food and came outside to watch and cheer on their team mates.

Oceania: Pacific Games Volunteers were Amazing

oceania pacific games volunteers were amazing 6578176a0b1bd - Oceania: Pacific Games Volunteers were Amazing - The Pacific Games Organising Committee deserves a significant mention for months of preparation towards making the Games a successful evetn for all involved. A huge thank you from OHF to Jefferson Izoma, who was appointed as the Hockey Sports Manager, to liaise with Gill Gemming, the appointed  Hockey TD.  This role started nearly 3 years ago as the venue needed to be built, inspected, measured and signed off  and all the equipment ordered and purchased so it was a much wider role than is normal for a technical delegate. There were compromises to ensure a legacy for SIHF, as previously SIHF had no venue and this hindered their ability to run regular tournaments as they often had to wait for a free ground! So a purpose built venue and goals were always the number 1 priority.  An enormous shout out to Clint Flood, Rob Dorovolomo, Jefferson Izoma,  Genevieve Kelani, Serah Kuper, Helen Pihema and Brenda Perreaux who organised all the logistics including flights, accommodation and accreditation for all our technical officials. The venues teams Alison Birchall and Steve Clark were so supportive in ensuring that the venue was built to specifications and available for use a lot sooner than many venues. Finally to Martin Rara President of NOCSI, who has been supportive to hockey growing as a sport since its re engagement in 2014.
