South Africa: Redemption Arcs and Statement Wins on Day 2 of the SA Hockey IPT in Cape Town

Day 2 of the SA Hockey Interprovincial Tournament saw redemption arcs, statement wins, and semi-final places confirmed, at the Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town, on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

With pressure mounting in the pools and every goal carrying weight, teams stepped up across the board, none more so than the SA U21 sides who responded in emphatic fashion.

Women’s A Section

Northern Blues 0–4 SA U21

In a tournament-shaping upset, the Junior Proteas stunned the reigning champions with a near-perfect performance. After a disappointing Day 1, the SA U21s were clinical and composed.

Ntsopa Mokoena opened the scoring, Olympian Taheera Augousti controlled the midfield, and further goals from Anja Tromp, Hannah Quinton (PC) and Jodie Blows sealed a famous victory.

Free State 3–1 KZN Raiders

Free State bounced back from their heavy defeat with a spirited performance. Lisa van der Merwe struck first before KZN Raiders equalised late via Brooklyn Kroutz.

But it was Free State who finished strongest, with Merisone Mokone and Reatile Pitso scoring in the dying minutes to grab a crucial three points.

WP Peninsula 0–1 North West

In a tightly contested Pool A, North West continued their impressive form with a narrow 1-0 win over WP Peninsula.

A solitary strike from Lize Claasen ensured they remained the only team with a full haul of points in the group.

Western Province 6–0 Southern Gauteng

In a clash of heavyweights, it was the hosts who blew the contest wide open. Kayla de Waal and Charne Maddocks gave WP a 2-0 halftime lead.

The second half was a masterclass: Caylin Maree, Onthatile Zulu, Charlene Boshoff, Ashleigh Thomas, and Brady Wiseman all found the net in a blistering attacking display that underlined WP’s title credentials.

Women’s B Section

Mpumalanga 0–7 WP Disa

Disa made their mark with an emphatic victory as Trusten Barnard stole the show with four goals. Jana van Antwerpen added a brace and Michelle Winter completed the scoring, keeping Disa’s promotion hopes firmly alive.

Eastern Province 5–0 Mpumalanga

Eastern Province made it three wins from three with another clean sheet and five different scorers. Tasmyn Preller, Jade Singleton, Elan van Vugt, Toni Marks, and Tristan Howard all found the net in a performance that reinforced EP’s dominance in the B Section.
