South Africa: South African Indoor Hockey Women’s Team Set for Nkosi Cup

The South African Indoor Hockey women’s team, propelled by the steadfast support of SPAR, has achieved remarkable success over the past 12 months. Their journey began with a triumphant 2-0 series win against Ireland a year ago, showcasing exceptional defensive prowess. This strength carried them to the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup, where they made history by securing a spot in the semi-finals for the first time. With a new head coach and a wave of new talent, they triumphed at the Tuanku Zara Cup in Malaysia, clinching victory over Switzerland in a captivating final.

To conclude the year on a high note, the team is geared up for the inaugural Nkosi Cup in Cape Town, where they will face off against Namibia and Ireland. SA Hockey has unveiled the squad that will represent South Africa in this tournament. Notable returnees include World Cup stars Cheree Greyvenstein, Laiken Brisset, Jess Lardant, and Daniela de Oliveira, who missed out on the Malaysia campaign. Adding to the excitement, Laylaa Davids is set for a remarkable month, making her debut in both the indoor and outdoor national teams.

Leading the squad as the most experienced player is Tuanku Zara captain Jamie Southgate, while Tegan Fourie, the standout player of the Malaysia tournament, aims to continue her extraordinary goal-scoring form after netting 62 goals in 57 games for the South African team.

Head Coach AJ Spieringshoek is eagerly anticipating the home ground advantage:

“We are thrilled to be back home for the inaugural Nkosi Cup. The Malaysia victory was an exhilarating journey, and after a tremendous year for the South African Indoor Hockey team, we’re excited to conclude the year with our first series on home soil since the World Cup. It’s another opportunity to expand our player pool and fortify our depth ahead of the 2024 African Hockey Indoor Cup of Nations. We eagerly await the support of our home crowds and strive to give them every reason to cheer!”

The Nkosi Cup is scheduled from December 15-19, 2023, with tickets available via the SA Hockey FanApp.
