Eight teams will compete with seven of them having the same mission of grabbing the remaining three automatic slots and Malaysia is placed in Group B along with Bangladesh, Korea and Oman while Group A is filled by India, Indonesia, Japan and Pakistan.
In a press conference held at the Malaysia Hockey Confederation (KHM) Meeting Room and also attended by KHM President, Dato ‘Sri Subahan Kamal, the list of 20 players was announced by the National Men’s Senior Squad Team Manager, Dato’ Mirnawan Nawawi with two goalkeepers, six defenders, eight midfielders and four strikers will go to Jakarta.
According to the Head Coach of the National Men’s Senior Squad, A Arulselvaraj, qualifying for the 2023 World Cup is the main target of the team and its players are fully prepared to give their best performance as well as ensure that the target is achieved.
“We have gathered information about the teams that we will meet at the tournament and for the group stage action, we also have the opportunity to see the matches involving the Korean and Bangladeshi teams first before going down to meet them.
“Our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup and we will take one match after another. The tournament uses a “super 4” system where the top two teams of groups A and B will meet in a one -round league.
“If India is in the ” super 4 “ group , it means that all four teams qualify for the 2023 World Cup, but if India is not in the group, it means that only three teams will get the automatic slot,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Tigers Team Leader, Muhammad Marhan Mohd Jalil explained that he and the other players adhere to the principle of playing as a team and they also apply various things in training to ensure that the principle is always there.
“The target set for us is to qualify for the World Cup, but for the team’s personal target is that we want to emerge as the 2022 Asian Cup champions.
“I often remind my teammates to take every pressure as something positive and make that pressure a strength as well as confidence to play.
“Every player has known the advantages and strengths they have and now all they have to do is translate them into matches,” said Marhan who has amassed 271 international caps.
