Scotland: Scotland women defeat France to finish sixth at EuroHockey Championship

A 2-0 victory saw Scotland women finish the EuroHockey Championship with a win over France to claim sixth spot at the tournament.

Sarah Jamieson earned her 100th cap in the contest as both sides battled it out for second position in Group C in Monchengladbach.

It was an even opening to the match with Scotland having promising moments, particularly through the work rate of Heather McEwan.

France came closest but Jess Buchanan made an excellent diving save to her right to deny the French the lead.

In the second quarter the match continued to be tight. Scotland had their first penalty corner attempt but couldn’t make it count and the first half ended goalless.

An Amy Costello drag flick was saved by the goalkeeper’s left pad but the rebound found a French foot for another corner. This time, a two pass routine saw the ball fall for Sarah Robertson who swept it into the bottom right corner for 1-0.

Costello made another penalty opportunity count before the end of the third quarter when she found the bottom left corner for 2-0.

Early in the final quarter McEwan nearly bagged a third goal with a lovely deflected effort but an excellent diving save at the right post denied the goal.

Charlotte Watson was next to come close with a shot fizzed across goal from the right, but it went just wide of the far post.

In the end Scotland was comfortable and took the win to complete a successful tournament in Germany.

Captain Sarah Robertson, said, “I’m absolutely delighted. I’m proud of the team; A Division is tough against top teams, most of them are professional while our players all have jobs, so for us it’s a great tournament and great to finish on a win.

“It’s so nice to see the amount of young talent in the squad and we’re proud of the players playing their first A division. There’s still plenty to come up for us now with a World Cup Qualifier to look forward to, and we’re progressing well.”
