Scotland: Scotland dig deep but edged out by Australia at Women’s Junior World Cup

Scotland 0-3 Australia

It was a performance full of commitment and determination but Scotland lost 3-0 to an impressive Australia side at Women’s Junior World Cup 2025 in Santiago, Chile.

Australia enjoyed waves of attacks from the first whistle and Scotland did well to withstand the early pressure with resolute defending.

A great double save by Lucy Harris in goal for Scotland prevented Australia from taking the lead as the pressure mounted.

The opener came soon enough and a fizzed pass into the far post was guided home by Jamie Lee Surha for 1-0.

A penalty corner strike on the stroke of the end of quarter one saw Australia go 2-0 ahead through Evie Stansby.

The second quarter saw further waves of Australian attacks but Scotland stood up well. As the quarter continued the Scots began to make progress, with Jen Cain and Cat Nelli making up ground, but unable to create any opportunities.

Scotland were still in the contest and battled hard. In the final quarter they created a good opportunity to pull one back. Marianna Maclean run down the left and zipped cross for the far post but avoided the blue shirted attackers.

Australia eventually sealed the point when Madeleine Kenny made it 3-0 with a finish very similar to the opener. The match ended in defeat but Scotland walked away with their heads held high with a dedicated performance against one of the tournament favourites.
