Scotland: Scotland women defeated by England at EuroHockey Championship in Monchengladbach

Scotland women lost 3-0 to England in their first match of the EuroHockey Championship in Monchengladbach, Germany.

On a sunny day in Germany Fiona Burnet earned her 100th combined cap as Scotland got underway against England.

England enjoyed the majority of the ball but Scotland had good moments of attack in a quick opening quarter.

With a few minutes of the quarter remaining England cut through the Scots and Fiona Crackles slipped the ball low past Jess Buchanan for 1-0.

Tess Howard opened Scotland up down the left with a powering run and swung a pass to the far post for Lily Walker to dive in and make it 2-0.

Heather McEwan almost pulled one back for Scotland with a turn and shot that zipped just wide of the left post.

Scotland had a strong third quarter and created some opportunities. Sarah Jamieson had a sensational opportunity to pull one back for Scotland early in the second half when she ran through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but she couldn’t round the goalkeeper.

Moments later and another great chance for Scotland saw the ball cleared off the line by Anna Toman.

The final quarter saw Buchanan produce a succession of saves to keep England out as they went searching for a third.

It went to 3-0 with a lovely penalty corner deflection by Lily Owsley into the top right corner.

Scotland play Spain tomorrow at 11:15am in their second pool match of the tournament.
