Scotland: Watsonians pick up some points in the indoor Euros and Uddy women win in Premiership

GAME 1   WATSONIANS  3-5  SANSE COMPLUTENSE (SPAIN)

Watsonians were on the verge of creating a huge result in the opening pool match at the women`s EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup in Turkey yesterday, they held Spanish champions Sanse Complutense to three all, but conceded two late goals to go down 5-3 in the end.

The Scottish champions made the best of starts with an open play strike by Katherine Holdgate in only two minutes.   But by the interval the Spanish had regrouped and Sara Carmona and Sofia Alcaide gave them a 2-1 interval lead.

Back came the Scots and Genevieve Hussell put them back to level terms.  Paula Jiminez put the Spanish ahead again only for Sarah Jamieson to restore parity for the second time in the match.   Just as a share of points seemed the likely outcome Complutense mounted a grandstand finish with Cristina Condes and Carmona again sealing the points, although Watsonians picked up a bonus point for a narrow defeat.

GAME 2    WATSONIANS 3-3   MSC SUMCHANKA (UKRAINE)

Watsonians showed that they are far from out of their depth at this Euro level after a 3-3 draw with Ukrainian champions Sumchanka in their second pool match of the day. And the Edinburgh side finished the day in third position in their pool.

The Scottish champions made the best of starts with a goal from Sarah Jamieson in the opening two minutes. Karyna Leonova levelled ten minutes after, but by the interval Jamieson had struck again to give Watsonians a 2-1 interval lead.

However, early in the second half Leonova scored another couple for her hat-trick to put the Ukrainians 3-2 ahead, and that is how the score stood as the game proceeded to its denouement.  But just as the Scots faced another narrow defeat up stepped set piece expert Emily Dark to sink a penalty corner with less than two minutes left to secure a well-earned draw.

Keith Smith`s charges must now consolidate their position with further points on Friday against  Czech side Slavia Prague and host side Gaziantep Polisgucu in their bid to stay in Europe`s top flight.

Premiership

Uddingston were 1-0 winners over Glasgow University in a catch-up women`s Premiership fixture.  As a result the Lanarkshire team move up to seventh in the table and closer to the top six, but making the top six will be a real challenge.

Uddingston are six points behind sixth placed GHK with two games in hand – but firstly they have to win their two remaining games against Clydesdale Western and Inverleith…but then make up the 43 goal differential.   That could be a tall order.

The only goal of the game came in 61 minutes with a penalty corner conversion by Lucy Hogarth.
