Scottish Hockey is deeply saddened by the passing of Dennis Hay at the age of 84 at home in Edinburgh.
Hay, originally from Aberdeen, represented both Scotland and Great Britain as a player, including playing at the 1972 Munich Olympics, before going on to coach the GB Women’s team to a historic first Olympic medal – bronze at the Barcelona 1992 Games.
Dennis was a Scotland regular in Scotland’s midfield between 1964 and his retirement in 1974, missing only one game during this time. He was also a member of Scotland men’s first indoor side in Paris in 1973.
Dennis was tempted into coaching and led the Scottish Women to the World Cup in 1987. His contribution to hockey, particularly during a formative time for the women’s programme, is warmly remembered.
Dennis also made an exceptional contributions to Edinburgh University Hockey Club, where he was instrumental in its development, and Inverleith Hockey Club, where he was a member.
