Canada: 2023 Hall of Fame Inductee: Andrea Rushton

Class of 2023: Andrea Rushton enters in the Athlete Category

In the Athletes category of Hall of Fame, Field Hockey Canada is proud to induct Andrea (Andy) Rushton, a standout athlete who has left an indelible mark on the sport. Known for her exceptional defensive prowess, Rushton is celebrated for her 127 international caps and her contributions to Canadian field hockey.

“Andy was a quiet leader and an awesome teammate who would lead by example. I think just seeing her work rate and commitment to the team was inspiring,” said Emily Rix, Rushton’s former teammate.

Andy Rushton’s journey into field hockey began in Victoria, BC, where she grew up in an athletic family. Introduced to the sport by her aunt, Rushton quickly developed a deep passion for the game. “I heard about field hockey because my aunt had played it. It was a spring sport, and I liked chasing a ball and running around more than baseball,” said Rushton.

Her dedication and skill was evident from an early age. At the University of Victoria, Rushton’s outstanding performance earned her the National CIS Athlete of the Year award. Rushton’s defensive excellence and understanding of the game were key to her success on the Canadian Women’s National Team. Her career highlights include participating in two Commonwealth Games, two Pan American Games, and notably, the 2008 Olympic Qualifier in her hometown.

“Defensively, she understood the game very well. She was always positionally sound, which was incredibly beneficial for me as a goalkeeper,” said Azelia Liu, Rushton’s former teammate.

After eight years with Team Canada, Rushton returned to her roots, giving back to the Victoria community that supported her throughout her career. “Growing up in Victoria, the community behind me played a huge role in my career. I hope to give back to the same community that provided me with so many opportunities,” she reflects.

Those who have worked with Rushton highlight her relentless pursuit of excellence and humility as defining traits of her legacy. “Andy would want to be remembered for her passion and love for field hockey,” said Rix. “She was always the first one on the pitch and the last one off, never complaining about conditions or training.”

As Andy Rushton joins the Hall of Fame, her story stands as a testament to how dedication, humility, and a love for the game can shape a truly extraordinary career in field hockey.
