The squad stands! 18 players will line up for the Danas at the Hockey World Championships in the Netherlands and Spain, which begin on July 1st. Our captains Sonja Zimmermann and Nike Lorenz lead the squad. In addition to the two leading players with Selin Oruz, Anne Schröder, Charlotte Stapenhorst and Cecile Pieper, national coach Valentin Altenburg also relies on a core of experienced players, all of whom have already gained a lot of tournament experience.
On July 2, 2022, the German women’s national hockey team will start the World Cup in the Netherlands with a duel against Chile. Now the squad for the tournament is set. This is the full Danas squad:
Win KO matches through experience
“With Anne Schröder, Sonja Zimmermann and Nike Lorenz, we have three important leading players in the team who bring a lot of experience from tournaments to this team at different levels on the field. For me, the three are an important extension of the field,” says national coach Valentin Altenburg about the nominated squad. “Our goal at the World Cup is to play free and win knockout games.”
Valentin Altenburg, Dana’s national coach
The support from the Hockey Bundesliga in the last few weeks is particularly important to Valentin Altenburg: “A big thank you goes to my coaching colleagues from the Hockey Bundesliga, with whom there has always been very close coordination in the last few weeks and months to reduce the strain of the players so that we could prevent failures.”
Group games with a reunion with world champion Netherlands
A challenging group phase awaits Valentin Altenburg’s team: Last weekend, the Danas played their group opponents, the reigning world champions, the Netherlands twice in Hamburg and lost both games. The opening opponent of the German team, Chile, is taking part in a World Cup for the first time. It is also the first encounter in a competitive game between the two teams. Nonetheless, the squad should not be underestimated as the team qualified for the World Cup as one of the top 3 teams in the 2022 Pan American Cup. The game against Chile takes place on July 2nd at 4:30 p.m., before the Germans want to celebrate a revenge against the Netherlands on July 3rd at 7:30 p.m. Last group opponent is Ireland. The game will take place on July 6th at 4:30 p.m. For the Irish it is already the 4th participation in the World Championships and in 2018 they were able to surprisingly win the silver medal. In a direct comparison, however, Germany is still undefeated: Germany won two of four matches and the other two games ended in a draw.
