EHL: Léo and Gantoise assured of EHL spots next season

Royal Léopold and Gantoise will look to build momentum ahead of the Ion Finals weekend in Belgium having already wrapped up an EHL spot for next season.

Gantoise have long been assured of top spot in the Belgian women’s league which they now lead by 15 points with two rounds of the competition to go.

With Belgium earning two spots at next season’s expanded EHL Women’s 12-team event, it means they will be involved next Easter.

But there is no time to rest on their laurels as another national championship win would see them earn a place in the FINAL8.

If they make the Belgian final in May, the side who joins them in the decider will earn the other EHL spot available. If Gantoise do not make the final, the overall championship winner will be the one bound for Europe.

Léo were assured of finishing in top spot in the men’s competition with three games left to play and retain a 10-point lead in the regular season table.

It means they have at least a place in next season’s EHL Men’s KO16 assured ahead of games with Herakles and Racing Club de Bruxelles before they play their championship semi-final.

Who joins them there remains to be confirmed. KHC Dragons have been the form side since Christmas with seven wins out of seven to rise to second place.

They sit on 36 points, one ahead of Waterloo Ducks and two clear of both Gantoise and Braxgata on 34 points in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

When it comes to the playoffs, Léo can upgrade their EHL ticket to a FINAL8 spot should they win the championship outright.

If they reach the final, whoever joins them in the decider will also win an EHL ticket while the third one will be determined in the third place playoff.
