EHL: Polo increase lead at head of Spanish league

Real Club de Polo increased their advantage at the top of Spain’s MGS League standings after beating CD Terrassa at the Eduardo Dualde.

The victory puts the EHL FINAL8 side nine points ahead of its pursuers: Club de Campo, Junior and Egara.

Carlos García Cuenca’s team beat Jordi Fitó’s team 2-1. After a goalless first quarter, Pau Petchamé put CD Terrassa ahead in the second quarter but the locals turned the score around thanks to the success of Marc Reyné and LLorenç Piera.

Polo took advantage of the Campo’s defeat in the Madrid derby against Sanse Complutense. In the first quarter, Eduardo González Mesones scored a double for Sanse that ultimately helped them take the victory. Chefo Basterra cut the lead early in the second quarter, but the scoreboard did not move again after that.

Campo stay in second, level with Club Egara moving level on points thanks to an 8-0 win over San Sebastián. Junior are also on 26 points, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Barcelona FC.

On the women’s side in the Iberdrola League, it was draws all round for the title contenders. Leaders Campo tied 1-1 at Real Sociedad: Lucía Abajo put Eduardo Aguilar’s team ahead, but Martha Charlotte tied the match and the points also had to be shared.

For Junior, they were also held to the same scoreline against Sanse Complutense. Lola Riera’s corner gave the Madrid side the lead with Junior levelling via Berta Serrahima with eight minutes to go.

Those results allowed Polo to move back into the title picture with a 3-1 win over Atlètic Terrassa. They move level with Junior and close the gap to Campo to two points.

Next weekend sees the Copa del Rey and the Copa de la Reina take centre stage. On Friday, Polo’s men face Junior while Camo take on Atlètic in the quarter-finals.

In the women’s competition, Junior face Sanse Complutense and Campo are up against CD Terrassa, looking to land spots in Saturday’s semi-finals in Benalmádena.
