Real Club de Polo won its 32nd Copa del Rey after beating Atlètic Terrassa in a shoot-out following a 2-2 draw in normal time La Estupa de Benalmádena.
In the one-on-ones, it was Carlos García Cuenca’s team who prevailed thanks to a huge performance from Luis Calzado in goal while Llorenç Piera scored the final goal that gave Polo victory.
For the second consecutive year, Xavi Gasol’s team is left without the cup after a shoot out.
Polo’s Marc Recasens said it was a huge win for this side: “We remain undefeated this season. We had a brilliant first half, one of the best we have played.
“In the second they matched us in intensity. In the shoot outs, with a great goalkeeper like Luis, we were able to take the victory. We have been training hard for a long time, we are very fit, we have defended very well and that has shown today.”
In the first quarter, Iñaki Zaldúa collected a corner rebound to turn the ball home and give Polo the lead. And they were 2-0 up via Recasens from another series of corners for a strong start.
Pepe Cunill, though, pulled one back from a one-on-one chance following an assist from Jordi Bonastre. Pau Cunill then fired home a corner in the third quarter for 2-2 and it remained that way after numerous efforts at either end to win it for both sides in the closing quarter.
