Netherlands: Nine questions about cup field hockey: what’s the state of play?

Now that play has resumed in the Tulip Men’s Premier League and the ladies resume their league next weekend, some catch-up matches in both cup tournaments are also scheduled in the coming days. But, what about the Gold and Silver Cup? We answer nine questions to refresh your memory.

Tonight, the ladies play in the Gold Cup. What round are we in?
In the quarterfinals.

But weren’t the games in the quarter-finals already scheduled in November?
They were. But those matches were cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

What matches are scheduled tonight?
HGC-Den Bosch, Hurley-Amsterdam and Ring Pass-Tilburg. The game between HGC and Den Bosch starts at 7 p.m.. The other two games will be kicked off at 8:30 pm.

Then we miss one quarterfinal match, right?
Indeed. The match between Oranje-Rood and Were Di was already made up a week after the cancellation. The Eindhoven formation won the match 3-0 against Were Di. Thus Oranje-Rood qualified first for the semifinals.

And what about the Gold Cup Men?
The matches in the quarter-finals did go ahead last November. That means the semifinalists are now known. On March 20 Almere plays Victoria and Den Bosch hosts Schaerweijde.

There are also games in the Silver Cup this week. Are those also catch-up games?
Yes. On Thursday two matches from the sixth round will be caught up with the ladies: Ede-Maarssen and AMVJ-Forescate. Both games start at 8:30 p.m. Six more matches from the same round will be made up on March 14.

And for the men?
In the Silver Cup Men, four catch-up matches in the fifth round are scheduled this week. Starting on Thursday with the game Amersfoort-‘t Spandersbosch, which starts at 8:30 p.m.

So what games will be played on Friday?
These are the duels: De Mezen-Upward, Barendrecht-Rijswijk and Zwart-Wit-Warande.

Weren’t those first two duels stopped in November?
That’s right. The game De Mezen-Upward will be restarted Friday when the score is 1-1 in the second quarter. That also applies to the game between Barendrecht and Rijswijk. That game was halted with 1:30 left on the clock in the second quarter with a corner for Barendrecht and a score of 0-1 in favor of Rijswijk.
